I can't imagine in my Edinburgh years as a student I avoided it completely - it is kind of tucked away from my main routes about the city. Homer Simpson I believe.

Poppy, Calton Hill is well down the places to go list for a tourist but only because there's so much else. It's been years since I was at the castle - must give it another look sometime soon.
I hadn't heard of any other time balls - catching it was a complete fluke.

Dominic, The top of the ski lift is a good deal higher than this, so you'd certainly have a great view from there. Only just on this day as the clouds nearly got that far down. I only ever got half way up it - that was the day I discovered skiing (way back in the 80s)- it's not for me and haven't been on a set of skis since - I can live without being James Bond

Ellie - I hope we can look forward to your wee visit appearing on the blog.

Thank you John, I'm sure there would be plenty opportunities for a wee tune in your squeezebox in many of the Edinburgh bars of an evening these days.

Jim, I'd like to go back and have a bit look at the city then, what must Waverley have been like with all those steam trains and the smoke and all. Only for a minute or two then I'd like to come back, perhaps for a shower.Sandy's witteringshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05009803939431014995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-13076399114973269872012-03-04T21:53:14.813+00:002012-03-04T21:53:14.813+00:00Lovely post of the capital Sandy.

Used to pop up to Edinburgh quite a lot in the days of cheap petrol, usually to pick up a mate who lived opposite the Dick Vet, en route for Glencoe or some such mountainous place.

My last good view of the area was from the top of that ski lift on the edge of the Pentlands.Dominic Rivronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02618013365521035400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-38131483393148443022012-03-03T22:58:19.532+00:002012-03-03T22:58:19.532+00:00I love your blogs, great photos and the history an...I love your blogs, great photos and the history and explanations to go with them! I am not so good at the history bit on my blog, the photos are my main focus, but I do like history. It is some time since I was in Edinburgh, we got to the Castle but not Calton Hill. Great to see Princes Street and all the wonderful views and buildings. We have a time ball tower here too, its good fun trying to catch the ball when it drops isn't it?? Hope you are having a good weekend :)Poppy (aka Val)https://www.blogger.com/profile/16587141292168333896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-73074013899993121372012-03-03T16:16:52.437+00:002012-03-03T16:16:52.437+00:00Interesting lot of history there. As for the replica of the Parthenon, me I would go and think they got to that point and realised "Hey, this is hard to do. How did those Greeks build that thing? Forget it. Let's go home." And so they did.John @ Beans and I on the Loosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09185975793295220723noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-75558162025593857462012-03-03T14:57:00.996+00:002012-03-03T14:57:00.996+00:00Great series of beautiful shots!
