I think most people realise this now and just enjoy it for what it is.

Shundo, I'd never thought of the monument like that but your right. Perhaps some gloomier weather and a few ravens swooping about the top would help it's Lord of the Rings image.

Jim. I suspect that without Watt and Stephenson and chums we wouldn't be where we are today - they were the core of the industrial revolution.
Indeed history does get muddied with time. In Wallace's most famous victory at Stirling bridge, he shared command of the battle with Andrew Moray. Moray is all but forgotten now despite his inportance in Scotland's history in the 13th century.

John, it is perhaps as well that saving the country does not depend on me. The heros of the past would leap up and down spiral staircases, waving broadswords about, like mountain goats (that's leaping up and down stairs like mountain goats, not waving broadswords about like mountain goats).
Despite being horrible things, spiral staircases can often be worth it and after half a bottle of wine back at the campsite, I felt much better.Sandy's witteringshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05009803939431014995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-6112695005843426682012-08-30T20:09:24.183+01:002012-08-30T20:09:24.183+01:00I think I may have stayed on that very campsite ma...I think I may have stayed on that very campsite many years ago while on a cycling tour of your fine country. Thanks for the memories and for your succinct tour of Scottish heroism from those who feared nothing to a chap who doesn't like spiral staircases!John "By Stargoose And Hanglands"https://www.blogger.com/profile/00832873074550725579noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-86719659060375336282012-08-28T09:00:23.783+01:002012-08-28T09:00:23.783+01:00Very interesting post Sandy. You've now cast doubts on the authenticity of Mel Gibson's account of the man.
Reference Braveheart, it sounds like history gets muddled up with the passage of time.

Re. James Watt, he was some genius. I remember seeing his beam engine at Loughborough while making a delivery.
I'm sure I saw some of his stuff too in the Birmingham Museum of Science and Industry which is sadly no more.

The Glebe Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09609629219727888442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-32744260622789584692012-08-28T01:16:14.198+01:002012-08-28T01:16:14.198+01:00I have to say that from a distance, it looks like ...I have to say that from a distance, it looks like it wouldn't be out of place in the Lord of the Rings, home to one of the minor wizards perhaps...
You are a braver man than I even to point your camera over the edge - I got vertigo just looking at the photo.Shundohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08626305350101368912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-90833491835438554112012-08-28T01:02:19.925+01:002012-08-28T01:02:19.925+01:00Very cool post.
