I suppose, though Ruthwell Kirk as well as being the central of the 3 is going to be the chosen remaining church because of it historic cross. When the churches of Ruthwell, Mouswald and Cummertrees were united in 2009/10 these chairs were moved from Mouswald church to Ruthwell as the church chosen to be the new parish church.kirkmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03931974276609561221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-5296129713450965302013-08-05T00:24:29.699+01:002013-08-05T00:24:29.699+01:00Pam, The sea horse is quite mild compared to a lot...Pam, The sea horse is quite mild compared to a lot of church decoration over here. For centuries our craftsmen have been filling the churches with all sorts of symbols of a distinctly pagan nature. The most common is the Green Man which is no more christian than fly in the air. The Irish, who wouldn't want to be out done, have many of their churches decorated by figures called Sheela na gig. I'm certainly not going to describe them here but I am typing this after the watershed when young people should be in their beds -they're quite indecent, so if you look them up be warned.

In Scotland, the Anglican church is known as the Episcopal church. Most parish churches are Church of Scotland, something quite different.

Sandy's witteringshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05009803939431014995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-8799576037324434702013-08-03T14:09:04.055+01:002013-08-03T14:09:04.055+01:00Whoever the model was for the face in the chair lo...Whoever the model was for the face in the chair looks like they were enjoying some good drugs! Surprising to see a merhorse with wings in the church, wouldn't that be blasphemy as it was a creature not created by God? Hmmm, perhaps the Anglican Church is a little more lenient on things like that. Beautiful art, but I loved the headstones the most.Pam https://www.blogger.com/profile/05979446142128610261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-78727084994833690072013-08-01T18:27:31.869+01:002013-08-01T18:27:31.869+01:00They managed to turn out a few of the Rev Duncan&#...They managed to turn out a few of the Rev Duncan's descendants on his bicentenary when I was a lad - after two hundred years, they could have missed you out I suppose. That belief of your Dad's should be easy to prove. Our family belief is that Jim Bowie (of the knife fame) springs from our family somewhere back in the dim and distant - never been able to prove that one though not impossible as his mother was Scottish.

My main worry is that I'm descended from a mad Ruthwell chair maker (actually that might be quite pleasing)Sandy's witteringshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05009803939431014995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3473643361564881319.post-20410324493345348012013-08-01T10:00:21.456+01:002013-08-01T10:00:21.456+01:00Ruthwell was a popular visit when my dad was still...Ruthwell was a popular visit when my dad was still alive. He was always of the belief that he'd found a link that meant we were related to Henry Duncan. Somewhere a Murray married a Duncan.
